Internship Program Overview
The Painted Cloud’s Arts Education Internship Summer Program is an opportunity for budding artists/educators to gain hands-on experience working with professional teaching artists and young artists ages 4-10 years. It is designed to give undergraduate visual arts and arts education students meaningful career experience in artistic studio management, curriculum implementation, classroom management, and teaching. In 2025, one individual will be accepted into this program.
Internship Dates
June 14, 2025 to July 11, 2025.
Internship Time Commitment
Interns attend a training/studio setup session June 14 (9am-12pm). Interns work in the studio 2-3 days per week for 4 weeks (June 16-July 11) from 8:15am-3:15pm.
Internship Stipend Award
Teaching Artist Interns are awarded a stipend upon successful completion of trainings, studio teaching, and studio support.
Stipend amounts:
$1,680 - $2,016 (depending on experience) awarded to interns working 3 days per week + training day.
$2,800 - $3,360 (depending on experience) awarded to interns working 5 days per week + training day.
The award is not a replacement for wages but rather intended to support future education or artistic endeavors after as participants pursue their artistic and professional ambitions. This is a cash award to an intern reported on IRS Form 1099 box X.
Practical Experience & Professional Development
The Painted Cloud Internship is an intensive learning experience, with rigorous full day sessions observing, teaching, supporting, and studio management in an arts education environment. Roundtable discussions provide opportunities for mentors to offer guidance and for interns to connect with one another.
Internship Outline and Expectations
Teaching Artist Interns at The Painted Cloud are fun, energetic, and passionate about teaching young artists in a vibrant and inspiring studio setting. Teaching Artist Interns gain professional experience working with top-tier Teaching Artists. As a part-time position, the job of the Teaching Artist Intern involves supporting Teaching Artists with in-person sessions based on a predetermined curriculum. Our team of Teaching Artist Interns are trained to create a safe, process-based learning environment based on our community-minded philosophy. Teaching Artist Interns keep young artists engaged in process while teaching the basics of art elements, critique, and dialogue. Teaching Artist Interns work well in a fast-paced environment, think on their feet, take instruction, and manage last-minute changes during their sessions. In addition to in-person teaching, Teaching Artist Interns will prepare for sessions, chip in on studio upkeep, prep materials, and communicate with families. All Teaching Artist Interns report to the director and studio manager.
Skills & Qualifications / Learning Objectives
The Painted Cloud’s Arts Education Summer interns must be flexible, patient, energetic and able to pivot on the fly in the face of unexpected circumstances, accommodating the changing needs of students ages 4-10.
Interns learn to assist teaching artists, support young artists, organize and prepare materials and maintain studio space and supplies during summer sessions. The supervision and safety of young children is a primary expectation that includes the use of materials, snack breaks, lunchtimes and time before and after sessions.
Having experience or a strong interest in working with children is essential. Having a broad knowledge of art materials and techniques is valuable.
Having open communication with the director and studio manager (including receiving constructive criticism and feedback) is essential to strengthening teaching practice through feedback, professional development, and collaboration. Open communication/a collaborative mindset with everyone in the studio is required.
Bonus: Interns with basic knowledge of digital photography, and video is a plus. Basic proficiency with video (analogue and digital) and video mixers is valuable but not necessary.
Selection Process
Applicants will be judged on a competitive basis using the following criteria:
Connection to field of study or career goals. Priority will be given to undergraduate visual arts, arts education, and sociology students
Some experience or qualifications to be successful in the internship
Intentionality, quality and thoughtfulness of application
Articulation of learning outcomes of the internship, and how the internship host will support learning
